Nuns, Laywomen & the Future

In 1964, Tenzin Palmo was one of the first Western women to be ordained as a novice in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.

She later received full bhikshuni ordination in Hong Kong in 1973. A disciple of Khamtrul Rinpoche, she spent twelve years in retreat in a Himalayan cave. She is the founder of Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery in India and continues to campaign on behalf of female practitioners.
